Why I Joined HearingUp

A Personal Note from
Dr. Sarah Cary

One of the moments that shaped the way I practice audiology happened years ago.

I was working with a woman who had significant hearing loss and had struggled to hear well for a long time. She had worn hearing aids before, but despite her best efforts, she still felt like she was missing too much of the world around her.

After a thorough evaluation, we fit her with hearing aids that were carefully programmed and verified to match her specific hearing loss. When I turned them on and she heard through them for the first time, she looked at me and asked, “Is this how I’m going to hear?”

I’ll never forget that moment. My answer was simple: “Yes. This is how you should be hearing.”

What I didn’t know at the time was that she would not be the last patient to experience that kind of transformation.

That experience reinforced something I have seen throughout my career. Hearing aids are incredible technology, but technology alone does not guarantee success. The fitting process matters. Verification matters. Taking the time to measure and confirm that hearing aids are performing appropriately for the person wearing them matters.

That does not mean hearing aids restore perfect hearing. They don’t. Hearing loss is complex, and every patient is different. But research consistently shows that verified hearing aid fittings provide better outcomes than fittings that are not verified.

That belief has guided my approach to patient care from the very beginning. When I learned about HearingUp and its commitment to evidence-based best practices, I knew it aligned with the way I already believed hearing healthcare should be delivered.

My goal has never been to simply provide hearing aids. My goal is to help people hear their best and to ensure they receive the full benefit of the investment they have made in their hearing health.

HearingUp represents a public commitment to that philosophy and to the patients who place their trust in me every day.

See It for Yourself

What Makes a HearingUp Provider Different?

Dr. Cliff Olson explains exactly what evidence-based hearing healthcare means — and why it matters for your hearing outcomes.

What is HearingUp?

A National Network of Audiologists
Who Actually Do It Right

HearingUp is a network founded by Dr. Cliff Olson, Au.D. — one of the most-watched audiologists on YouTube with hundreds of thousands of subscribers and a nationally recognized voice for patient advocacy in hearing healthcare. Through his YouTube channel, Dr. Cliff has spent years educating consumers about hearing loss, hearing aids, and what truly good audiology care looks like — empowering patients to ask better questions and demand better outcomes.

To join the HearingUp Network, an audiologist must be vetted and approved by Dr. Cliff himself for following evidence-based care standards. It’s not a membership you can simply buy — it’s a designation earned by demonstrating a genuine commitment to doing right by patients. Dr. Sarah Cary, Au.D., founder of Show-Me Hearing Consultants, is proud to be a Dr. Cliff Approved HearingUp provider.

01

Vetted by Dr. Cliff Olson

Every HearingUp provider has been personally reviewed and approved by Dr. Cliff — not just listed in a directory. You can trust the standard of care before you ever walk in the door.

02

Real Ear Measurement Required

HearingUp providers use Real Ear Measurement to verify hearing aids are actually programmed correctly for your unique ear — a step most clinics skip entirely.

03

Patient-First, Not Sales-First

No corporate quotas, no pressure, no upselling. HearingUp providers recommend what your hearing actually needs — and if you don’t need hearing aids, they’ll tell you honestly.

04

Comprehensive Diagnostic Testing

A thorough diagnostic evaluation — not a quick screening — so you truly understand your hearing before any recommendation is made.

“Most people don’t realize that the majority of hearing clinics operate as retail stores with sales quotas. HearingUp exists to help patients find providers who actually put their outcomes first.”

— Dr. Cliff Olson, Au.D., Founder of HearingUp

Real Ear Measurement

Why Most Hearing Aid Fittings
Fall Short

When you get hearing aids fitted at most clinics, the audiologist plugs your audiogram into the hearing aid software and uses a computer-generated prescription. It sounds reasonable — but there’s a critical problem: every ear canal is shaped differently. The same hearing aid programmed to the same prescription will sound completely different depending on the physical characteristics of your ear.

Real Ear Measurement (REM) solves this. A tiny probe microphone is placed in your ear canal alongside your hearing aid. We then measure exactly how much sound is actually reaching your eardrum — in real time — and adjust the programming until it matches the target prescription precisely.

Studies show that only 30% of audiologists perform Real Ear Measurement routinely. At Show-Me Hearing Consultants, we consider it an essential part of any hearing aid fitting — because there is no other way to truly verify the aids are working correctly for you.

2025 JAMA Research: A randomized clinical trial of 245 participants found that audiologist-fitted hearing aids following evidence-based care — including Real Ear Measurement — produced significantly better outcomes than over-the-counter devices. The conclusion: the provider matters more than the device.

What Evidence-Based Hearing Healthcare
Looks Like at Every Visit

Most hearing clinics follow a sales model. We follow a clinical one. Here’s what that means for you at Show-Me Hearing Consultants — whenever clinically appropriate.

01

Comprehensive Evaluation

Full diagnostic audiological testing — not just a screening — to truly understand your hearing before we ever recommend a solution. You deserve accurate answers, not assumptions.

02

Honest Recommendation

We recommend what your hearing actually needs. No quotas, no pressure, no upselling. If you don’t need hearing aids, we’ll tell you plainly — and we’ll tell you what to watch for going forward.

03

Real Ear Measurement

When hearing aids are the right choice, we verify they’re performing correctly for your specific ear anatomy — not factory averages. This critical step ensures the technology actually works for you.

04

Long-Term Partnership

Your hearing journey doesn’t end at the fitting. We’re your partner in better hearing for life — adjusting, supporting, and advocating for your outcomes long after your first appointment.
